About Me

Pet mom, INTJ, explorer, and lover of designing innovative technology. I'm a critical thinker with a knack for organization. My favorite challenge is taking something super complex and making it simple. I take a no-ego approach to design where I strive to make data-based decisions and the best idea always wins.

My introduction to UX design

I initially went to school for music. I learned about my love for UX Design while working at a music/tech start-up that underwent a complete product rebuild. As part of a small team I ended up having a huge role in developing the new product. I fell in love with the user interviews, brainstorming sessions, sketching wireframes, and working with both creative and technically-minded people. I left the company to formally study UX design and pursue it as my new career path.

How music relates to UX

Music is an experience.  Knowing how to play your instrument and the notes on the page is good, but that's not what makes a great performance. A functional product is a given to the user. It's when the designer can empathize with the user and create a real solution to their problem that makes a good experience.

Music teaches you to break down complex problems into digestible bits. Even the best musicians in the world practice their scales every day. That's because it helps them look at sheet music with more black notes than white space and identify the fundamental patterns so it's not as intimidating as it looks. I'm not scared of complex user problems because I know how to break them down to find the solution.

Getting a 95% on a test is great.  Play 95% of the right notes?  You're fired. Musicians have a heightened sense of attention to detail - it's part of the craft. They have to be deeply focused on the present phrase AND thinking about what's coming next. High-pressure situations is our forte (no pun intended).

As first chair flute in a symphony of 80+ people, I had to know how my part fit into the bigger picture. It requires great communication and collaboration to achieve the common goal in both a symphony and as a UX Designer. Understanding the roles and needs of everyone on the team, or the stage, is imperative for success.

I wrote a hundred versions of the song before I wrote the best version of the song. Designing a product requires patience and an inquisitive, open mind. You have to be determined enough to play with many different solutions before you find the best solution. When composing or designing, you have to be open to feedback and flexible in making changes.

Double majoring and double minoring in college

Go ahead and stereotype me because I was indeed a nerd. Running from class to class, always ahead on assignments, student ambassador, summa cum laude, and stressed... but thriving. I also had 3 or 4 jobs at a time throughout all of college. I guess you could say time-management is my hobby.

My three kitties

Being a working mom is hard, but I make it work for my beautiful kits. That's "kits" not "kids". Meaning kittens. I have Boy (Golden Tabby), Bee (Tortie), and Berlioz (Black Domestic Short Hair). ***Please note before asking about my cats: you will need to set aside at least 1 hour for the slide show.

Eating vegan

I've been vegetarian my whole life and vegan for the past 8 years. When I was little, my mom asked me if I wanted to eat a hamburger. I asked what it's made of and she said "an animal". I said "ew no" and BAM life decision made. I promise I'm not annoying about it, but I will tell you the best vegan spots around town and share delicious recipes if asked.

Playing Nancy Drew PC games

By day, I'm a skilled product designer. By night, I channel my inner sleuth, diving into the mystery-filled world of Nancy Drew PC games. There's nothing quite like solving puzzles, uncovering clues, and cracking a case.

My neuroscientist sister

I bet my sister is cooler than your sister (this argument may contain bias). She got her Ph.D in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience and makes machine learning models that predict your health patterns. She currently works at Oura, which makes wearable rings that give you insights and predictions about your health.
